Sneak Preview-December 11th

Muay Thai specialist Kaitlin Young (4-2) is fighting striker Shana Olsen (1-0) at Ironman MMA at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota less than two weeks after I leave sunny Tucson for the tundra of Wisconsin. I am hoping to cover this fight live, if all goes according to plan. This 140-pound catchweight fight is the first time we'll see Kaitlin Young after she was defeated by Gina Carano in May '08. Although that fight was listed as a medical stoppage, Young herself reported that the doctor cleared her to fight but the commission would not allow it. Young was also not invited to a post-fight news conference and after party or privvy to a post-fight interview, leading many to conclude that the stoppage had more to do with Young's black eye than any actual medical reason.  (Incidentally, Monday's New York Times featured an article about the NFL shifting its handling of concussions from doctors and trainers employed by the team to independent neurologists--due to potential conflicts of interest. Having a commission fake a medical stoppage takes the "potential conflict of interest" to a whole new level.)
