SCHILT STUNS HARI TO WIN K-1 GP TITLE

schilt2Semmy Schilt equaled Ernesto Hoost's record for most K-1 GP Title victories with his fourth win, and broke Peter Aerts's record for fastest run through the final day of the tournament.  Schilt won all three of his fights in an amazing 5:52 seconds total. (Photo: Susumu Nagao)
The best thing that Badr Hari can say about this year’s K-1 World GP Finals is that he took his loss like a gentleman, as opposed to his unsportsmanlike antics of last year.  Other than that, it was déjà vu all over again.  After dominating first round knockouts in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the K-1 World GP Final at the Yokohama Arena, Hari was stunned in the finals by veteran Semmy Schilt.  Schilt knocked his opponent down three times in the first round to earn a TKO victory and his fourth World GP crown tying the record for most tournament wins held by K-1 legend Ernesto Hoost.

Schilt also broke Peter Aerts’ record for the fastest run to the tournament title, earning victory in a combined 5:52 seconds of fight time.  Before the final bout, however, the prevailing opinion was that Hari would have little trouble duplicating his victory of earlier this year when he stopped Schilt in under a minute of the first round.  Schilt came out using leg kicks to keep Hari on the outside, and withstood an early flurry from the Moroccan slugger.  After Hari launched another quick combination, Schilt caught him with a perfectly placed straight right that sent him hard to the canvas.  He took the standing eight count, only to be met with a left hand that floored him again.  When action resumed the massive Dutchman caught him with a high kick that forced Hari to his knees as the referee waved off the fight, awarding Schilt the TKO victory under K-1’s three knockdown rule.

While Schilt won the tournament and put his name in the K-1 record books, it was evident from the outset that Badr Hari is the promotion’s biggest star.  He received a thunderous ovation in all of his fights and deserves credit for rededicating himself to his craft following his disqualification in the 2008 GP Finals and the ensuing fallout.  He even gave a very sportsmanlike speech to the crowd following Schilt’s victory, a sign perhaps that his maturity is finally catching up to his considerable skills as a fighter.

Schilt reached the final by dispatching France’s Jerome LeBanner in the quarterfinal round and an exhausted Remy Bonjasky—who was also reportedly suffering from a leg injury—in the semifinal round.  Hari overwhelmed Ruslan Karaev in the quarterfinals and avenged his Fields Dynamite 2008 defeat to Alistair Overeem with another quick knockout victory in the semis.  Overeem reached the semis by demolishing Ewerton Texiera in his opening bout, while Bonjasky defeated Errol Zimmerman.

The evening began with a ‘reserve fight’ victory for ‘Mr. K-1’ Peter Aerts over Gokhan Saki by unanimous decision.  Also on the card, Daniel Ghita used his brutal leg kicks to knock out MMA veteran Sergey Kharitonov.  Kharitonov was never really in the fight, but demonstrated insane toughness and heart as he kept fighting through an endless barrage of punishing blows to his lead leg.  Finally, it just gave out and he collapsed to the canvas.  In the co-main event of the evening, Tyrone Spong looked very sharp as he earned a unanimous decision victory over Kyotaro.
