SavSci Interview: Brian Bowles

bowlesintBrian Bowles defeated Miguel Angel Torres in early August to become WEC Bantamweight Champion
A small amount of people won a very large amount of money at WEC 42, when Brian Bowles not only put an end to former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres' 17-fight winning streak but did so by first round knockout. Bowles, who remains undefeated with 8 wins and no losses, also holds notable wins over Damacio Page and Will Ribeiro. In addition to holding the Bantamweight belt, Bowles is also ranked by Sherdog as the #10 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world due in no small part to his great striking, stellar grappling, mental toughness and knock-out power. I had the pleasure of speaking with him earlier this month.

================
Yael Grauer: How do you prepare mentally for a fight?

Brian Bowles: I think for me it's more just preparing physically, because I feel like if I prepare physically and I'm in really good shape it helps my mind. And I’m reassuring myself that I'm ready and then I’m just ready to go. Physical preparation is mental preparation for me.

YG: When you were about to fight Torres, there was all this hype about how he was unbeatable...

BB: I don't really get into that crap. I don't really get on the internet and listen to all the blogs and all that crap; I just totally ignore all that. Basically, when I have a fight coming up I just tell my friends not to even tell me any kind of crap about how big of an underdog I am, none of that. I just go to a fight with a level head and I don't really worry about it. Anybody can be beat. Everybody and anybody is gonna be beat.

YG: One of my favorite fights of yours was when you fought Damacio Page and he was about to slam you and you jumped into a standing closed guard guillotine.  That was one of the coolest moves I've ever seen in the WEC. That was wicked cool. I tried it once but it didn't work. Is that a move you get a lot in training?

BB: I don't usually get a ton of standing guillotines,  but I do get a lot of guillotines, It's one of my favorite moves, and he just happened to just give me his neck when he shot in and I think I just got lucky and caught both of his arms in.

YG: How's your hand?

BB: It's all right. I'm just trying to get it better right now; trying to get it stronger and just waiting for it to heal up.

YG: Jose Aldo called you out, Is that someone you're interested in fighting?

BB: I don't really care who I fight. Whoever earns the right to fight me or challenge me for the belt then that's who I'll fight. I don't really want to try to pick anybody. I really don't have anybody I'd particularly like to fight. I'll just fight whoever WEC decides.

YG: If you had to choose between Aldo and Dominick Cruz, who would you pick?

BB: Dominick Cruz.

YG: Why?

BB: I think he's next in line. Aldo hasn't even fought in the 135 weight class and I think he needs to focus on Brown right now.

YG: Would you be interested in fighting Mizugaki?

BB: Sure. It'll probably happen down the line. We both have a similar fighting style and I think if he keeps winning he's gonna be right in there as a challenger for the belt; if I keep winning and he keeps winning I think it's gonna happen down the road. I think it would be a good matchup for a fight.

YG: A lot of people already want to see you have a rematch with Miguel Torres. How do you feel about that?

BB: I think it's gonna happen. If he wins his next fight and I win my next fight, I'm pretty sure it's that'll happen. That's usually the way it works; that's the way Faber did it and I think the way it's gonna work with Torres.

YG: Do you know who you are fighting next?

BB: I think it's probably Dominick Cruz. I haven't signed a contract on that, but before I fought Miguel that's what they said, that the winner of that fight would fight the winner of our fight.

YG: Training at Hardcore gym, do you have any good Forrest Griffin stories?

BB: When I joined the gym he was on the reality show, and then when he came back he ended up moving to Vegas so I wasn't really around him that much but from what I hear he's a pretty crazy guy. He ate 120 chicken wings one time. I was there. He got sick. I don't really know if it was 120. It was a ton of wings though. I was the first time I ever really hung out with him. I went to his wedding, but there were no good stories that happened at his  wedding

YG: Wait, you went to a wedding without good stories? And it was Forrest's wedding? Wow. Okay.

YG: How come you don't get paid more?

BB: I don't know. I wish I did.

YG: Does that piss you off?

BB: Yeah it pisses me off, I have to make a living. There's so many people in the UFC who are making double what I am and they're not even the champ. I'm twice the fighter some of them are and they get paid twice as much as me. It's kind of ridiculous.

YG: So are you gonna renegotiate that?

BB: I wanna try to. I just gotta keep winning. I have a couple more fights left in this contract and then I'm gonna try to renegotiate.

YG: What was your hardest fight?

BB: Probably Will Ribeiro. He has really good hands; I like to stand and bang with him. It's the only time I've been to the third round, so that's really the reason it's my toughest fight, because it  lasted longer than all the other ones. He's a brown belt on the ground with really good hands, though, he's a really well-rounded guy.

YG: Who are your favorite fighters?

BB: I only have one particular fighter I like, and I like to watch certain fighters. I like GSP. He don't talk crap, he's not lame, he's not a douchebag,  he don't have to run his mouth to prove his point. He just goes out there, he's a nice guy, and he whips, and he dominates. I like to watch people like Frankie Edgar, and Clay Guida, people that just put on a really good show.
