ROH on HD Net for 6/27/09

rohworldtagteambeltmc1The Ring of Honor tag team belts were on the line as Bryan Danielson and Tyler Black challenged champions The American Wolves on the 6/27 edition of ROH on HD Net
ROH on HD Net for 6/27/09

No ROH on HD Net episode will air on July 4th, as the network has decided to celebrate the birth of our country with the Hawaiian Tropic Girl Model Search.  I’m the last person to have an issue with oiled up, bikini clad bimbos on TV but what is more American than professional wrestling?

Anyway, the 6/27 show begins with Hogewood and Prazak on camera and it sure looks like they’ve finally had their suits tailored.  Prazak’s shirt/tie combo ain’t half bad.  They talk briefly about Austin Aries ROH title win and previews tonight’s main event which will be a ROH tag team title defense for the American Wolves against Bryan Danielson and Tyler Black.  That’s a relief since the way my luck has run lately I was expecting a debate over US monetary policy between the Briscoe Brothers to be the main event.

No DQ ‘Fight Without Honor’ starts the show:

JIMMY JACOBS VS. DELIRIOUS

Brodie Lee and MsChif accompany Jacobs down the walkway, but midway down he sends them back.  Jacobs meets Delirious at ringside and the brawl is underway.  Delirious starts on offense banging Jacobs into some ringside chairs, and then pulls a table out from under the ring.  Jacobs blades as Delirious sets up the table on the ringside barricade.  Delirious goes to work on the cut and thankfully this isn’t the WWE and they don’t censor the bloody Jacobs by switching to black and white.  Delirious sets up the Cobra Clutch suplex, but Jacobs takes over with an eye rake.  Jacobs throws some chairs into the ring and throws Delirious inside.  Jacobs goes for a spear, Delirious moves and he goes sailing through the ring ropes hitting the table at ringside.  Delirious hits his ‘Shadows over Hell’ finisher from the top turnbuckle to the table outside of the ring, throws Jacobs back inside and gets the pin.

WINNER:  DELIRIOUS

Announcers sell it like this was the ‘blow off’ for the feud.  Danielson and Black cut a promo with Kyle Durden backstage. Quick promo clip of the Dark City Fight Club. Nick and Matt Jackson aka ‘The Young Bucks’ are introduced and head to the ring for a match.   They’re young, fast and scientific and since their opponents don’t get an introduction this should be a squash:

THE YOUNG BUCKS VS. JOBBER #1 & #2:

Fans start a ‘Young Bucks’ chant.  Brandon Day and Sal Rinauro are their opponents and they hit some slick doubleteam moves reminiscent of the ‘Rock & Roll Express’.  Nick Jackson tags his brother and they hit a double hiptoss takedown into a double dropkick on the mat for a near fall.  Brandon Day gets tagged in as the jobbers get in some offense.  Day physically resembles a slightly smaller version of former ECW/current TNA competitor Rhyno.  Jobbers get some doubleteam action and hit a double clothesline.  This could be a ‘Mulkeys/Gladiators’ type scenario where they’re going to ‘elevate’ the jobbers.  Prazak keeps putting over how the Bucks have been tearing it up out West.  Matt Jackson makes the tag and his brother hits some fast and agile high flyer type moves.  Bucks hit a couple of sweet doubleteam moves and gets the pin with a combo 450/moonsault.

WINNERS:  THE YOUNG BUCKS

Claudio Castagnoli cuts a promo.  He makes Durden hold up a Swiss flag and challenges Brent Albright to a flag match.  Funny when you can be a heel from the famously neutral country of Switzerland.  Clip shown of Austin Aries ROH title win, and he cuts a promo.

ERNIE OSIRIS VS. BRENT ALBRIGHT

Prince Nana literally has to drag ‘Dirty Ernie’ to the ring to face Albright.  The ‘residentially challenged’ Osiris tries to bail out again and Prince Nana tries to get him back in.  Fans start a ‘Take a bath’ chant directed at ‘Dirty Ernie’.  Albright goes for a collar and elbow lock up and then sells his opponent’s repugnant lack of hygiene.  Albright nails a big clothesline followed by a back suplex.  Albright hits some Flair chops in the corner followed by some forearms.  Albright whips Ernie hard into the turnbuckle for a near fall.  Ernie pokes Albright in the eye and takes over by rubbing his nasty pits in his opponent’s face.  That doesn’t last very long and Albright takes over slamming Ernie into the turnbuckle from the backbreaker position.  He then hits his half nelson suplex for the pin.

WINNER:  BRENT ALBRIGHT

This gets a ‘slap the porpoise’ catchphrase out of Hogewood, and Albright cuts a promo in the ring putting over America and Philadelphia.
Before the main event here comes a newly shorn Nigel McGuinness.  He lectures Black and Danielson about not trusting each other as the American Wolves make their entrance.

AMERICAN WOLVES VS. BRYAN DANIELSON & TYLER BLACK

Richards and Edwards accompanied by Shane Hagadorn and Sara Del Rey.  Black starts works off a headlock after a series of hiptosses.  Richards backs Black into the corner and tags in Eddie Edwards.  Black hits a back bodydrop and makes the tag with ‘The American Dragon’.  Edwards works off a headlock and hits a shoulderblock before Danielson hits a kneestrike and tags in Black who gets in a little offense.  Danielson now comes back in and hits a kick into a chinlock.  Danielson tries the Mexican surfboard but doesn’t get it and tags in Black.  Edwards finally tags in his partner and now Davey Richards and Black exchange Flair chops.  Black tags in Danielson who gets the surfboard this time and Black hits a double team dropkick for a near fall.

Edwards tags back in and after a doubleteam Danielson takes the offense back.  So far there’s a very ‘old school’ pace and psychology to the match. Danielson doing his bridging leg grapevine spot until Richards breaks it up.  Danielson drop kicks Richards to the floor and hits a tope through the ropes on both Wolves.  Danielson goes for something off the top rope but gets dropkicked out of midair by Richards.  Hogewood talks about the ‘change in momentum’ as Richards takes over with a chinlock.  Wolves doubleteam Danielson with kicks and stomps.  Fans start a tepid ‘Dragon’ chant and perhaps motivated by the outpouring of love from the crowd hits a dropkick and makes the hot tag to Black.  Black backdrops both Wolves to the floor and hits a sweet dive over the top rope.  Springboard clothesline by Black for a near fall.  Black hits a standing shooting star press for a near fall.  Black sets up a suplex but Richards blocks and then recovers with a hard kick and hits a doubleteam forearm followed by a doubleteam top rope move for a near fall.  Danielson is on the floor ‘in pain’ as the Wolves work over Black.  Anyone who grew up watching wrestling in the ‘kayfabe’ territory era can see where this is going.  Now Danielson shows up and makes the save.  Doubleteam moves by the faces for a near fall.  Now Danielson back out to the floor working over Edwards, but gets reversed and slammed into the barricade.  Black misses the Phoenix splash and gets rolled up for a two count.  With Danielson on the floor the Wolves are able to hit their doubleteam finisher but ‘The American Dragon’ shows up and makes the save.  Now Black is down and Danielson trying to take on both Wolves.  Black gets up at the last minute to make the save and now all four men are in the ring going at it with just over two minutes left in the program.  Danielson has the triangle choke on Edwards, while Black gets a two count.  Danielson sends Black up top with instructions to hit the Phoenix splash on Richards.  Edwards climbs up on the ring apron, Danielson goes after him which causes Black to lose his balance.  He takes umbrage at this and gets into a shoving and arguing match and while they’re working out their differences Edwards schoolboys Black for the pin.

WINNERS:  THE AMERICAN WOLVES

Not a particularly exciting episode, with three squash matches and a tag team match that was more intended to further build the Black/Danielson feud than anything else. No ROH on July 4th, so we’ll be back with the July 11th edition.
